Disclosure Day

It truly shocks me how overlooked and underrated this film has been among the 2026 releases so far. The fact that a film like Obsession received so much more praise than Disclosure Day tells me that the attention span and interests of society are changing. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Obsession for what it was, and cheers to Curry Barker for his success with the film. I'm sure he has a wonderful career ahead of him. However, when it comes to engaging an audience through action, story depth, and meaning, Steven Spielberg is a master of the craft. It saddens me that Disclosure Day didn't bring people together in the way I believe he hoped it would. I don't tend to gravitate toward sci-fi films or anything to do with aliens and monsters, but a Spielberg film with John Williams composing? Sign me up immediately. I was not the least bit disappointed by this movie. In fact, it exceeded my expectations. As I mentioned, I don't tend to enjoy sci-fi, but Disclosure Day was different. Spielberg and Koepp found a way to blend the "fantasy" of other life with the everyday life we are currently living, and they executed it beautifully.

Nearing his 60th year as a filmmaker and approaching the end of his career, it's clear that Spielberg has a lot he wants to get off his chest, starting with his belief in other forms of life and his hope for peace in the life we have here. Emily Blunt (Margaret Fairchild) delivered an Oscar-worthy performance and truly was the heart of the entire film and story. I found myself in tears a handful of times throughout the film, possibly because every piece of music composed by John Williams is a masterpiece. (The Jurassic Park theme is in my funeral playlist.) I understand how people could have wanted more of a narrative for Danny (Josh O'Connor), and I think it would have been interesting if they had explored more of his own experience. However, the film is much deeper than aliens. It's about empathy, hope, and love for one another in a world where we truly can't control anything else.
