I can’t remember the last time I saw a film in a sold out theater, but it warmed my heart. As a young creative, it’s inspiring to see what a young filmmaker like Curry Barker was able to do with a $750k budget. I have to be honest, given the amount of hype surrounding the film, my expectations were unreasonably high. Obsession emphasizes some unfortunately common issues with the dynamic between men and their relationships with women. There were parts of the film where I think a lot of women could actually relate to Nikki and her unconsciously being toyed with by a man. A man who was obsessed with her first nonetheless. It was nice to see Curry Barker acknowledge and explore this ever so common dichotomy. In regards to the “horror” aspect of the film, I personally was not scared during any point of the movie and I would consider the entire story to be a bit of a slow burn. I found certain parts to be mildly disturbing (not too much) and the Sarah scene was a 10/10 jump scare, but I didn’t find the overall film to be scary. Inde Navarrette absolutely smashed the role of Nikki and I think Michael Johnston also delivered an excellent performance as Bear, I'm sure we will continue to see them in films for many years to come. I think the story itself was very good and I was blown away by the cinematography, for such a freaky movie, it was honestly beautiful. I love to see anything that brings people together these days and Obsession certainly did that this Summer, blowing up the box offices and sparking conversations between people of all ages. I’m interested to see what Curry Barker continues to create throughout his career.
